If you only read one trilogy in the next year, pick this one. If you enjoyed Pitch Black, you’ll love Emmy in Into the Black. (Well I’ve enjoyed reading all of Elise’s books that I’ve read.) Back to Black...I could not put this book down. I stayed up waaay too late reading Into the Black and starting the third book.
This is definitely a book where you have to trust the author with the journey, but oh what a ride. Elise is a wonderful author. Her characters are well rounded. Her books are well edited. She is so funny. One of my favorite part of this book is Emmy’s humor. And the suspense. This was one of those trilogies that I was sad when I finished, not that it was a disappointment - because it wasn’t - it was excellent, but because I fell in love with Elise’s world and Emmy and so many other characters even though they were on the fringes of the book. I’ve enjoyed moving on and reading many of their stories.
If you don’t like strong women, don’t read this. If you can’t stand books so funny that you laugh out loud, don’t read this book. If you don’t like characters you can quote, don’t read this book. If you don’t like twists and turns, don’t read this series.
If you like strong women, smart women, women with sass, women who are each their own, women who don’t necessarily fit a box, read this book and Elise’s other books. You won’t regret it.

After receiving the first book for free, I readily bought the rest of the series and was NOT disappointed! I read them all as fast as I could. Elise is awesome at making you really care for her characters and get into the book so you feel as if you are living it right there with them. I will definitely get more of Elise's books and love her writing!
Into The Black picks up where Pitch Black ended. Luke and Tia reappear. We also get the background of Emerson-how she met her husband, her childhood, her training. This back flash takes up a large portion of the book and was fascinating. We get to know Emerson because, like Luke, we only knew her as Ash in Pitch Black. And Emerson is one tough lady. She is like a female James Bond. A mission in Syria shows just how good she is. Can't wait to read the next book!
So I continue to read the series of Blackwood books & the second was better than the first! The first one gave all the background I needed to carry on reading and not have to try to figure out the who or what behind the characters. I really enjoy the direction these books are going & can't wait for the next and the next... Great book!
**Spoiler Alert**
First Book was Ash/Emmy escaping a life altering event and falling in love (having heart changing moments) We were left with the classic 'will they/won't they get back together. Making me hastily buy book two - what a disappointment. I really was going for 1 or 2 star on this by I've never given below a 3 star review no matter what the plot line was.
Book Two can be read as a standalone. I do not even know why Luke was a character.
Book Two was centred around Emmys life and how she got there, I'm not sure why the author labelled it a Romantic Thriller as there was no romance in it (except Luke getting off with Emmys best friend). Book One Emmy was a woman struggling to move on and repair from a tramatic event. Book Two she came across as weak and (dare I quote one of her sayings from Book One) "spoilt bitch". Her life story evolved from 15yo stripper to this amazing operative that needs an advisor for everything from clothes she wears to what she eats. She doesn't even know what vehicles she owns????!!!!! She's supposed to be a top operative but doesn't have a grasp on the basics in life (sounds like the "spoilt bitch" suggestion in Book One)
Sorry - this book totally turned tail on the other one. I was waiting for the 'quesiness' she was feeling to be pregnancy followed by a happily ever after with maybe a few more twists and turns. Maybe take the Romantic out of title. This book isn't romantic - she hands the one person she cares about in book one willingly over to her best friend. She may have a 'different' relationship with Black to convention but no Romance Book allows the Husband and Wife duo to regularly play away. Nor the husband to be so controlling and almost abusive in his manner in a relationship. OK, he bought her nice things but so does most wife bashers out there and my take from the hugely successful business is she is the lynchpin anyway. Without her there was no amazing CIA takedowns/escapades. Maybe Book Three unravels the relationship more and he is really still alive ready to give her the life she could have had with Luke that the first book suggested but I'm not buying. If I wanted a Thriller I'll buy a Patricia Cornwall I was after a romance.
Diamond (Emmy) is at it again. Her kick-ass, take no prisoners confidence is coming back even as she still grieves her husband's death.
While battling demons from her past, Emmy expertly handles a kidnapping, a CIA hostage rescue situation, and a Syrian stolen arms depot that goes up in a ball of fire requiring a creative exit. In calmer times, we visit an exclusive private club, a boxing gym, and Emmy's homes (really mansions) in the US & London. She discovers a new, hidden love affair, handles a concerned and pissed-off ex-boyfriend & brother, rescues a colleague and former lover, and even survives seven days in the Jordanian desert with the help of bats and Bedouin. It's a good thing Emmy has a private jet, fast cars, and the unstoppable Blackwood Security Team, who are family to her, to back her up (when they can find her).
Into the Black also takes us on a walk down memory lane with Emmy and we discover the combative way she met Black, the fortuitous way she met Bradley, the tumultuous way she met Nate & the heroic way she met Dan while keeping us entertained in Emmy's face-paced, action packed present day life. This book is a must read! It's like the best, most exciting roller coaster ride you've ever been on!
This is book #2 of the Blackwood Security Series, but it can be read as a standalone (no cliffhanger); however, you'll want to read the entire series after reading Into the Black! You have been warned! )
