Babies are born with the skills and desire to tell parents what they need. In this short book, experienced moms (who happen to be experts) help new parents understand why babies behave the way they do and share tips to help parents cope with the ups and downs of this exciting time of life. In simple concise language (best for tired parents), the university-based authors describe what scientists have learned about how babies communicate, why babies cry, and how babies’ sleep patterns change as they grow older.

New parents often wish they had a manual to tell them what to do and this book does just that. It explains what to expect and what it means...things I learned as a maternity nurse and the mother of 5. Babies have behaviors besides crying to communicate with us if we know what to look for. When we understand how they sleep we can know to wait for signs of deep sleep before trying to lay baby down. When we know they normally eat every two hours but may cluster feedings or that they that the second day of life they may be fussy because they need to practice eating and are a bit disorganized - this knowledge makes sense of what is otherwise a confusing time in the early days of parenting.Product details

Quick read with a lot of great information!
The information was OK but basic and not that well organized. I would have preferred something a bit more in-depth. This information is available with a basic google search.
Great overview. Quick read. Good info for newborns and new parents. Would've been nice to have more details but overall good.
This book was recommended to me by my lactation consultant. for first time parents its a quick read (you can read it during those late night nursing sessions) and it really helps to explain things!
A quick read, this book provides some helpful reassurances to new parents about what is going through a newborn's head. That said, the information is very basic and does not provide extensive help for specific newborn challenges. If you are looking for a quick overview of infant communication, this is great, but if you are seeking more detailed support on cues you will need to supplement with additional resources. For example, the book provides some examples of cues but is not an in-depth catalog of expected cues for hunger, fatigue, etc.
I am a nanny and this book is spot on, and I love it very much. This is a great book for first time mom's it will help them make sense of what is happening with their new born and the result will be less emotional breakdown. Every new mom should read
It has some excellent observations for new parents who are not used to babies. For a new family I know it was very reassuring that the experiences they had in the first two weeks were typical. They were not doing anything wrong. Advice for what to do when the baby gets over stimulated is very sound. This does not go too in depth, but it is a very good overview and general guide to help new parents find their way with an infant.
